This is a reference table, not a diagnosis and not veterinary or medical advice. It cannot tell you how much of a plant matters for a particular child or a particular animal — that depends on body weight, on the part eaten and on how long ago. If a person or an animal has eaten part of a plant, phone the poison information centre or a clinician; do not wait for symptoms, and do not make anyone vomit unless you are told to.

What is in it

Listed as non-toxic to cats and dogs by the veterinary poison lists. Cats are nevertheless drawn to it, and the reason is behavioural rather than chemical: the arching leaves and dangling plantlets move, so they read as prey. A cat that eats a lot of leaf may vomit, in the same way it vomits after eating grass — that is bulk and fibre, not poison.

What to expect if it gets chewed

None expected from the plant itself. Occasional vomiting of chewed leaf after a serious binge, which resolves on its own — the same mechanism as a cat eating grass, and about as concerning.

What to do

Nothing to do. If a cat is repeatedly eating this or any plant, that is worth mentioning at the next vet visit, and a pot of cat grass usually redirects the habit.

How to grow it

Growing conditions for Spider plant
ConditionWhat it wants
LightBright indirect light; it tolerates much less
WaterKeep lightly moist in summer, drier in winter
Temperature13-27 °C; very forgiving of a cool room

It multiplies itself: mature plants throw out long stems carrying baby plants, which root in a fortnight if pegged onto damp compost while still attached. Brown leaf tips are the standing complaint and are usually fluoride or salts in tap water, or fertiliser build-up — flush the pot through with plain water occasionally. It flowers and offsets best when slightly pot-bound.

What it gets confused with

It is the plant most often recommended as "the safe one for cats", and it deserves that, with the caveat that safe does not mean the cat should live on it. If your cat is genuinely a plant-eater, growing cat grass or oat grass in its own pot gives it a legal target.

What this one can replace

These fill a similar role in a room or a season and are on the toxic side of the lists. If you are swapping something out of a home with a cat, a dog or a toddler in it, this is the trade you are making.

Pothos

Toxic. Insoluble calcium oxalate raphides

Snake plant
