Christmas cactus: pet-safe, and how to grow it

Christmas cactus (Schlumbergera spp.) is not flagged on the veterinary toxic lists. What that means in practice, plus light, water and temperature, and what it gets confused with.

This is a reference table, not a diagnosis and not veterinary or medical advice. It cannot tell you how much of a plant matters for a particular child or a particular animal — that depends on body weight, on the part eaten and on how long ago. If a person or an animal has eaten part of a plant, phone the poison information centre or a clinician; do not wait for symptoms, and do not make anyone vomit unless you are told to.

What is in it

Non-toxic on the veterinary lists. It is the answer to the December question of what to put on the table instead of a poinsettia, an amaryllis, a pot azalea or a bowl of paperwhites — all of which are on the other side of this table.

What to expect if it gets chewed

None expected. A large quantity of the fibrous segments can cause mild vomiting purely as bulk.

What to do

Nothing required. If a whole segment has gone down and the animal retches repeatedly rather than once or twice, treat that as a bulk problem rather than a poisoning and phone the clinic.

How to grow it

Growing conditions for Christmas cactus
ConditionWhat it wants
LightBright indirect light; some direct winter sun is fine
WaterRegular in growth, sparse in the rest period — it is a jungle cactus
Temperature15-22 °C; a cool autumn is what sets the buds

It is an epiphyte from Brazilian forest, not a desert plant, so it wants a peaty open mix and more water than a cactus. Buds are set by short days and cool nights in autumn: about six weeks at 12-15 °C, or long uninterrupted darkness, and it flowers on cue. Do not move it once buds appear — a change of light direction makes it drop them. Propagates from a two- or three-segment cutting left to callus for a day.

What it gets confused with

What is sold at Christmas in this region is usually the Thanksgiving cactus (Schlumbergera truncata), with pointed toothed segments, rather than the true Christmas cactus with rounded ones. Both are equally safe and are cared for identically. Neither should be confused with the genuinely toxic euphorbias sold as "cacti".

What this one can replace

These fill a similar role in a room or a season and are on the toxic side of the lists. If you are swapping something out of a home with a cat, a dog or a toddler in it, this is the trade you are making.

Care guidance is standard horticultural practice for a cool-temperate northern climate. Poison-centre numbers are listed on the hub page and are worth confirming against your own country's health service.

Frequently asked questions

Is christmas cactus safe for cats and dogs?

Non-toxic on the veterinary lists. It is the answer to the December question of what to put on the table instead of a poinsettia, an amaryllis, a pot azalea or a bowl of paperwhites — all of which are on the other side of this table.

What happens if my cat chews christmas cactus?

None expected. A large quantity of the fibrous segments can cause mild vomiting purely as bulk. Nothing required. If a whole segment has gone down and the animal retches repeatedly rather than once or twice, treat that as a bulk problem rather than a poisoning and phone the clinic. On the veterinary lists "non-toxic" means the plant is not flagged as a poison, not that it is food: an animal that eats a large amount of any plant can vomit from the bulk alone, and potting bark or moss can obstruct a dog.
